THROMBOPHILIA – NOVEL DISEASE ASSOCIATIONS AND THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS

University of Ottawa

A leading cause of pregnancy complications endangering both mothers and babies is the formation of blood clots. Dr. Marc Rodger and his team at the University of Ottawa are engaged in a world-class research program to determine how to prevent this type of complication.

One in six people have a tendency to form blood clots, known as thrombophilia. Dr. Rodger is conducting a study to see if there is a link between this tendency and pregnancy complications due to clots in the placenta. If this link is confirmed, further research will be warranted to find ways to reduce the risks. Dr. Rodger is also overseeing a clinical trial of the use of a blood thinner as a preventive measure. The drug is being given to pregnant women with thrombophilia who had complications in a previous pregnancy. If it proves effective, it may become standard practice in such cases. An Early Researcher Award will enable Dr. Rodger to hire a research associate to assist him in his research.

"Our research will help make pregnancy safer, so moms stay healthy and have healthy babies," Dr. Rodger said.
