Transforming Good Ideas Into Great Jobs In Burlington

McGuinty Government Helping EcoSynthetix Create Up To 40 Jobs

NEWS

Ontario’s economy is turning the corner as the province continues to invest in innovative companies, like Burlington’s EcoSynthetix External link

EcoSynthetix develops environmentally friendly alternatives to petroleum-based products in the paper industry — a clean technology that is expected to create up to 40 new jobs in Ontario.

The jobs would be located at the new Global Innovation and Technology Demonstration Centre in Burlington.  The centre will house a pilot plant, where the company will focus on developing and commercializing an eco-friendly chemical from feedstock — such as wheat and corn — to replace the current use of petroleum products.

EcoSynthetix produces the chemical coatings and binders that allow colours to stick to paper and cardboard boxes — the products that make magazines and cereal boxes bright and glossy.  The company recently moved its headquarters and R&D division to Burlington from Michigan to take advantage of Ontario’s positive business environment.

Supporting made-in-Ontario technologies is part of the plan laid out in Ontario’s 2011 Budget — Turning the Corner External link — to create and support 10,000 new and existing jobs for families and strengthen local economies.

QUOTES

“Ontario’s economy is turning the corner because we are helping innovative companies create good-paying, local jobs.  EcoSynthetix’s technology has the potential to fundamentally change the paper and paperboard industry, and capture a huge share of this $800-billion market — while protecting our environment and boosting Burlington’s economy.”
Glen Murray, Minister of Research and Innovation

“Supporting sustainable technology like this helps the environment, promotes new business and creates local jobs right here in Burlington. We’re proud of our government’s commitment to companies like EcoSynthetix, and to Ontario’s cleantech sector as a whole.”
Kevin Flynn External link, MPP Oakville

“The move from petroleum-based to bio-based products is inevitable and required to achieve a sustainable way of living.  EcoSynthetix will play a major role in this transformation, and this assistance from the province is a key step in making this happen.”
– John van Leeuwen, CEO, EcoSynthetix
