Recipient of the Premier’s Discovery Award
For Natural sciences and engineering
Dr. Andreas Mandelis
University of Toronto
A leading applied physicist and instrumentation scientist, Dr. Mandelis is a professor in the University of Toronto’s mechanical and industrial engineering department. His prolific and diverse research over the past 30 years has been instrumental in defining the discipline of diffusion wave science and extending its range for practical uses. Dr. Mandelis co-developed photopyroelectric spectroscopy, a thermal wave technique that is now a standard used worldwide in physics, chemistry and engineering and in practical applications that include food science, semiconductor properties, material science and agricultural and environmental monitoring. Dr. Mandelis is currently at work on depth-selective bioacoustophonics, a novel tissue imaging technology that is showing promise for deep subsurface localization and early tumor monitoring.
