A Windsor Region Success Story
Homegrown technology improves manufacturing while helping job recovery
Ever wonder why each Gummi Bear candy looks exactly the same? It has a lot to do with Radix Controls’
cutting-edge technology.
Radix builds leading-edge technology solutions for manufacturing — in other words, they build products to produce a faster, better manufacturing process.
As Shelley Fellows, VP of Operations at Radix Controls Inc., explains, “We build the automated eyeballs that are inside the manufacturing process to make sure products are put together right. By putting the vision system within the process, we are the eyes working on behalf of the manufacturer.”

and Shelley Fellows
In Cadbury’s case the Radix technology was able to fix a problem of misshapen candy, and ensure each Gummi bear off the line was the perfect size and shape.
Fellows and her business partner Ross Rawlings could have worked anywhere in the world, but they chose to start their company in their hometown of Windsor. They both came home after working in Germany to launch Radix because it was important to them to create and retain jobs in their home community. A third partner, Nick Dimitrov, shares the same passion, and turned down a coveted job with Microsoft to help start the innovative company.
Radix’s high-tech know-how has been sought after to solve problems for a wide variety of clients. In addition to solving Cadbury’s sticky situation with its Gummi Bears, the company has worked with electronics manufacturers like RIM and Xerox, pharmaceutical giants like Bayer and Jamieson Laboratories, large multi-nationals like Proctor and Gamble, and the major automakers: Ford, GM, Honda and Toyota.
Because of its innovations, Radix has emerged from tough economic times — so far it has created 19 high-paying jobs and continues to grow. And, the founding partners take great pride in helping local manufacturing businesses become more efficient and cost effective — thereby freeing up capital and allowing companies to prosper.
In Windsor, a community hit hard by the recession, job recovery depends on innovation. It’s why Radix is a strong supporter of the WE-tech Alliance
and Ontario Network of Excellence (ONE)
.
“They are an incredible asset to our community,” says Fellows. “By connecting researchers, investors and companies, they help develop and push technologies to market. It boosts the local economy, creates jobs and helps keep Windsor a fantastic place to work and live.”
For Fellows, Rawlings and Dimitrov their company is a living, breathing example of how innovation not only drives the production and manufacturing economy, but creates wealth and improves quality of life.See also:
