The Government of Ontario established the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) to undertake research in prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and control of cancer, and to translate research findings into programs, technologies and therapies.
The institute will bring together multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional collaborations, which will allow complex questions to be pursued, contribute to the strengthening of Ontario's cancer research environment, and foster commercialization and private sector partnerships.
The institute will support more than 50 internationally recognized principal investigators, with a critical mass of scientists at the MaRS Centre and the remainder in nodes of excellence around the province. The institute will leverage the current research excellence at universities, research hospitals and health research institutes across Ontario, leading to greater integration of cancer research efforts across institutions.
Objectives:
- Ontario recognized as a leading jurisdiction for cancer research.
- Ontario more competitive in attracting research funds.
- Attract outstanding cancer researchers to Ontario, and provide training opportunities for the next generation of world class cancer clinician/scientists.
- Build/augment Ontario’s network of cancer research excellence.
- Contribute to a coordinated cancer system in Ontario.
- Strong links to clinical practice to support enhanced patient outcomes.
- Improve commercialization of cancer research to maximize benefits to people of Ontario and economic spin-offs in the province.
The Ontario Cancer Research Network (OCRN), established by the Government of Ontario in 2001, has been incorporated into OICR. Its programs, which will continue be delivered by the institute, include the following:
- Cancer Research Fund
- Clinical Trials Infrastructure Fund
- Clinical Trials Network
